The Salisbury Solar Saltbox

The Saltbox was a commonly seen timber frame-style home in early New England towns. Its characteristic steep-sloped roof, created then to ward off heavy snow loads, today can serve an increasingly important new purpose: As a spacious canvas for solar panels.

The panel-side of the roof, at almost 1,100 square feet, faces south to gather all the best rays, but the main entry can be configured for placement where it makes the most sense for your home site: On the Colonial-style face, the low-eave side, or at either gable end.

Brooks Post & Beam Owner’s Manual

Your timber frame is crafted from Eastern White Pine timbers, planed with chamfered edges and treated with one coat of water-based sealer. A typical kit includes 6×6 posts, 6×10 and 6×12 beams and ties, 6×8 joists, and 6×8 or 6×10 rafters. You may choose curved or straight 4×6 knee braces (mortise & tenoned). The Frame is pre-cut and numbered for easy assembly. Peg holes are pre-drilled, and the drawbore method ensures a snug fit without having to use straps and come-alongs.

Our standard panel package includes 4-1/2″ stresskin wall panels (R23) and 8-1/4″ (R30) roof panels. We provide all installation materials, including high expanding foam sealant, reusable foam gun, panel mastic, SIP screws, and plywood splines. Panels are pre-cut and routed for windows, doors, corners and ridge. Complete panel installation plans and tech support are included.

If you choose plank flooring for the 2nd floor, we supply 2×6 tongue & groove decking for you to cut and install on site. We also offer pre-finished roof boards for the perfect finishing touch on your vaulted ceilings.

We supply a tool kit with all of the specialty items you will need to assemble our frames. Your “toolbox” is built and filled with purchased and/or rented tools, fasteners, pegs, shop drawings, final plans, assembly plans, checklist and bill of lading for the trucking company. You will have copies of the Construction Manuals for your project – whether house, barn, or other structure. You will also have links to our video tutorials and resources.

We offer FREE telephone support or a paid onsite “Ambassador” to help you through the process (only necessary in more complex designs). For over four decades Owner-Builders like yourself have been our “bread and butter”. We recognize that erecting the timber frame and installing insulated panels is only the beginning of the construction process. We will remain available to you and your builder throughout the process, to answer any questions and to offer suggestions on construction details, materials, and finishes. We take pride in our ability to make timber framed homes affordable and the building of your home a satisfying and rewarding experience.
